Years ago, I ran a weekly video game column for a daily newspaper in my hometown. I called it Press Start.
It didn’t take long for the column to begin taking a defensive stance against the nonsense permeating the video game industry at the time: unethical games journalists, claims that video games make players violent and sexist, faux outrage over nontroversies, moral panics disguised as “social justice”—with Press Start, I weighed in on all these topics and plenty more.
In 2018, I moved away, and while my column survived remotely for a little while longer, eventually, the newspaper, like most in the country, hit hard financial times, and Press Start was nixed.
I was bummed, but I used my free time to continue covering games through podcasts and videos. I haven’t written a proper column in 18 months, but the writer’s itch has returned…
Introducing Patch Notes.
This is where I plan to write about video games, anime, comics, television, and the geek sphere in general, along with all the nonsense with which they are constantly bombarded. There’s a seemingly endless list of writers covering the nerdy topics we love through lenses of social justice and feminism, and the industry needs more people to step up in defense of properties from asinine criticism.
This is my stand. I hope you will join me.
